Grim Gum

July 28, 2017

What do you do when you have a legitimate addiction to gum, but you are sick and tired of filling your body with GMOs, nasty chemicals, and questionable ingredients? I’ve been down this road before – Xyla, Glee, Pur, Spry……tried them all and they’re all awful. They last about 30 seconds and the consistency is awful. Why is it that manufacturers of natural gums can’t make a product that tastes and acts like store-brands like (my personal favorite) Extra gum, but without the nasty ingredients? The mystery remains.

I decided to try again and I ordered 3 new gums on Amazon. (One of them I have used in the past, but it was many years ago, so I tried it again!) Sadly, the results are pretty much the same. If I want flavor and any sort of lasting chew, I have to resort to purchasing something that might kill me. But, I did choose one that is at least a bit of an improvement. Here are the results:

TreeHugger is definitely the sweetest of the bunch. It tastes great, for about 20 seconds. It is also filled with regular sugar so I felt like I was giving myself massive amounts of potential cavities in the 20 seconds it lasted.

I put Simply Gum in the same category as the gums listed above. It’s really awful. The flavor lasts approximately 10 seconds and it’s incredibly sticky. It is also filled with regular sugar, so as this nasty gum was sticking to my teeth, it was also likely causing cavities.

B Fresh Gum is a definite winner. It absolutely does not last like my trusty, chemical-filled Extra Gum, but it is the longest lasting of all of the natural gums I have tried. (It lasts several minutes instead of seconds, which is a vast improvement!) It is also made sugar-free, so I don’t feel like I’m causing huge holes in my teeth. One major drawback? It costs $13 a bottle! That is literally 13 times as expensive as my trusty Extra Gum. So, I can chew it, but only sparingly. One other word of caution – try not to drink anything bubbly after chewing it. The after-taste is a little shocking!

So, I have mixed results. I enjoyed the B Fresh Gum the most of all of them, but it’s outrageously expensive. And, it still isn’t long-lasting and tasty like my very unnatural, yet great tasting, trusty Extra Gum.

I think it’s time for me to start a letter-writing campaign to Extra Gum. Surely there is a way to make a chemical-free, non-GMO gum that tastes like the chemical-laden one in the grocery store?

We only get one body. The unfortunate truth is that many of the things that taste great, just aren’t so great for us.

I guess I’ll start a separate fund for B Fresh Gum.

1 Corinthians 3:17 (NRSV): If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.

Serve all with love.
