What the Health

July 22, 2017

I’ve been a vegan for 10 years now, and I’m used to joking, teasing, and (sometimes) mean comments about being a hippie, a liberal, a weirdo, etc. I have repeated questions about my health, my protein intake, etc. I’ve even been accused (more than once) by religious people of not earning my salvation because I don’t eat meat (not joking). And, I’ve put up with my share of bacon comments, and things like “well, gee, carrots have feelings too” and more.

I’m done with it all. The time for questioning people is over – the time for a change is now.

As a person who literally cured 3 very painful, nearly debilitating conditions almost a decade ago from only changing my diet, I am a firm believer in holistic, natural solutions to health problems. I am also a big fan of reading about health, watching documentaries, following online health communities and on and on. In other words, I consider myself well-versed on health topics. That said, I just finished watching What the Health and I am absolutely, 100% shocked. I am also downright terrified about what everyone around me is ingesting on a daily basis.

I already knew about things like feces in animal products, puss in milk, and the fact that meat causes cancer. I was not, however, aware that meat and dairy intake also causes diabetes, and there are definite links to autism, heart disease, incidences of strokes, and autoimmune disorders like Crohn’s and others. That’s all simply caused by ingesting meat and dairy products. (And, not “limiting” their intake is absolutely not good enough. That’s like “reducing” your intake of cigarettes.)

Hold your seat beause it gets worse – and this completely enraged me. Big “health” organizations like Susan G. Komen, The American Diabetes Association, The American Cancer Society, and others take huge financial contributions from the meat and dairy industry. Want to know whey they never actively discourage meat and dairy intake in spite of absolutely, 100% knowing the risks? That’s right – they are bought and sold by meat and dairy. And, it gets worse. They all take huge financial contributions from big pharmaceutical companies. No kidding – these organizations who are supposed to be helping us are doing nothing of the kind. All they care about is “managing” the disease once you have – they don’t give a lick about preventing it in the first place. Where is the profit in that?

Study after study after study after peer-reviewed article comes up with the same exact conclusion: meat and dairy intake causes a whole host of health problems. If you have any interest in reading study after study after study, see here: http://www.whatthehealthfilm.com/facts/. And, no – don’t try to argue that “well, I only eat grass-fed, organic meat.” It’s a carcinogen plain and simple. You can’t eat any of it and expect to be healthy.

Just a little reminder too – you aren’t just affecting your health, but you are affecting (negatively!) the health of the planet, but more specifically the health of the communities who have these horrific feedlots in their communities. People in these surrounding areas are dying at alarming rates of cancer and heart disease, and they suffer from autoimmune diseases and things like asthma at unreal rates. And, of course, these conditions negatively affect poor communities more so than communities with money. (Have you ever see a feedlot in Beverly Hills?)

Please, please watch the film and watch it through to the end. It is available on Netflix streaming, and you can also watch it online: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/whatthehealth. When you are ready to make the change to a vegan diet, there are a wide-variety of online resources available to help you with meal planning. I am also 100% happy to help in any way I personally can.

I am living proof that this can be done. It’s been 10 years for me and I will never look back. I’ve never felt better or stronger than I have in the last decade.

Thank you so much to the producers of What the Health. I have watched a lot of health-related documentaries and read a lot of health-related books and this is, by far, the best and brightest of the bunch.

Our bodies are our temples and we only get one. Treat it the best you can. Remember – Congress is fighting over healthcare even as I write this post. What a great way to reduce costs of healthcare – prevent health problems in the first place.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NRSV): Or do you not know that your body is a temple[a] of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own? 20 For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body.

Serve all with love.

  1. Great post! Everyone always has more to learn, it’s really devastating to me just how much information is hidden from us. Also – I can’t wait until the day I’ll be able to say I’ve been a vegan for 10 years! Keep it up.
