I really needed (ok, WANTED) a new handbag and I started researching online. Amazon has lots of handbags, but they’re mostly made in places that are known for their sweatshop, slavery-like conditions (like China, Indonesia, and Thailand.) Since I refuse to support organizations that enable slavery, I looked around for some good “fair trade” options. (That means that products are made with respect to people and the environment, and you can rest assured that your goods were made by someone making a decent wage.)
Fair Trade products are the ONLY way to go and The Hunger Site is one such organization that provides a wide variety of fair trade items, and they also help hunger in our communities. Every purchase you make guarantees a donation to “cups” of food in the US and abroad. 3-50% of each item purchased on their site goes to charity partners from Greatergood.org.
The Hunger Site has a special link just for “fair trade” items. They have so many fun things that I can imagine spending my entire paycheck here. Take a look: https://thehungersite.greatergood.com/store/ths/site I did, however, limit myself to my new handbag, which was crafted in Guatemala in fair trade conditions. I was very pleased to find that my purchase made way for 50 cups of food for people in need!
I received my new handbag in the mail (no shipping charges!) within a few days and I am incredibly happy with it. The handbag is very clearly handmade with attention to little details that you simply don’t see in sweatshop bags:
Here is a picture of the beautiful lining inside the bag:
I love my new bag and I love that my purchase is helping people in need!
Remember that it is of paramount importance that we, as consumers, support fair trade goods and The Hunger Site is one great place to find them. If you purchase goods made in non-fair-trade-certified locations, then chances are that you are supporting slavery. If you knowingly buy these goods, then you are a part of the problem.
Remember – change begins with all of us. Vote with your wallet. Thank you Hunger Site for the work you do and for providing such fun, fair trade products for many of us to enjoy!
Proverbs 22:9 (NRSV): Those who are generous are blessed, for they share their bread with the poor.
Serve all with love.
