Serving the World with UMCOR

By Kristen Johnson

Supporting missions work by serving the world should be our greatest goal as Christians. Jesus spoke often of our directive to serve the most vulnerable in society. He went so far as to say that serving others is, in fact, serving God. Matthew 25:40 (NRSV): And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family,[a] you did it to me.’

It’s incredibly important to also support organizations who serve, which is why I write about wonderful charitable organizations on my blog often. Today’s focus is on UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief). Although I confess to being a bit biased (since I’m a Methodist) – it is really and truly my absolute favorite charitable organization. And, considering how many organizations I work with, work for, support, and write about – that’s a really great sign.

UMCOR’s mission statement is simple: Compelled by Christ to be a voice of conscience on behalf of the people called Methodist, UMCOR works globally to alleviate human suffering and advance hope and healing. They work all over the world in disaster areas, providing humanitarian aid during war and conflict, providing short-term relief as well as long-term education, training, and support. UMCOR believes that absolutely everyone has God-given worth and dignity, so they serve the world and everyone in it, without any regard to race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. I can’t say enough good things about UMCOR.

One thing to really love about UMCOR is their “relief-supply kits” which they give out in disaster areas. I have been blessed to serve on service teams putting these kits together at various women’s group gatherings. UMCOR has specific instructions for assembling these kits, with the obvious idea being to provide the most needed supplies in the most needed areas in the most efficient way possible. Instructions for making kits are available on their site, and include bedding kit, birthing kit, cleaning bucket, health kit, layette kit, school kit, and sewing kit:

UMCOR’s work on poverty, disaster response, refugees, and hunger (just to name a few) is amazing. Charity Navigator has given UMCOR a 4-star rating and they have earned each and every star.

To support this amazing organization, feel free to work on relief kits with your service organization of choice, or you can donate here:

Thank you to the people of UMCOR for the wonderful work you do, serving the world, and for showing the love of Jesus for absolutely everyone.

Galatians 6:9 (NRSV): So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up.

Serve all with love.
