Toxic Chemicals, Big Business, & the Fight for the Environment

By Kristen Johnson

The Human Experiment, written and directed by Sean Penn, is an alarming (though frankly not surprising) documentary about toxic chemicals in our environment. We are completely surrounded by them and they are slowly but surely killing us, in the form of increased risks for cancer and other diseases.

The film details a rather vast conspiracy of big business and chemical companies who don’t care about our health and only care about their bottom lines. (If you think it’s an exaggeration, just think about the tobacco industry and you’ll know it’s true.) I highly recommend this documentary because it will shock you and, hopefully, inspire you to action. We must continue to fight the chemical industry every step of the way by protesting companies that participate in knowingly contributing to the problem and by writing repeatedly to our elected officials to vote on bills to provide much toughter laws. We can also make changes in our own households to make our own lives free of toxic chemicals. The film’s website has a comprehensive list of ideas that you can read: http://thehumanexperimentmovie.com/switch-to-safer/. I have also included some of my favorite products below that I use often and can highly recommend.

Lush Cosmetics: I have been using their makeup and skin care products for a number of years and I absolutely love everything I use! Ordering online is simple and easy, if you are not able to find a store near you. All of their products are ethically made, 100% vegetarian, and they use recyclable, compostable packaging materials. Most importantly, you can read all the ingredients on their packages and they are chemical-free, often made from things like fruit, flowers, and herbs. Order here: https://www.lushusa.com.

Bright Green: This amazing product line is available at every Safeway and Vons store and I am particularly fond of their “all purpose cleaner” which I use for everything from kitchen sinks, to cleaning up doggie accidents. They make floor cleaners, window cleaners, dish detergents, and even toilet bowl cleaners. Everything is environmentally friendly and biodegradable.

Bali Secrets Natural Deodorant: I’ve had a lot of trouble finding the best deodorant to use because, in my experience, the “natural” deodorants are incredibly inconvenient to use, difficult to find, and don’t work well. I just found this deodorant on Amazon a few weeks ago and I absolutely love it. It does go on “wet” so you will need a few minutes for it to dry. It is vegan, gluten free, and free from parabens and aluminum chlorohydrate. The bottle is even made of recyclable, BPA-free packaging! You can order it here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B012E9DMNQ/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&th=1.

We must continue the fight for chemical-free lives. Sitting idly by while the chemical industry continues to pollute our bodies and our world is unacceptable.

1 Chronicles 16:33 (NRSV): Then shall the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth.

Serve all with love.
