A dress to serve victims of human trafficking

By Kristen Johnson

Dressember is an absolutely amazing organization and, without a doubt, my favorite Christmas fundraiser of all time. Just by wearing a dress, we can advocate and raise funds for victims of human trafficking. The goal is to wear a dress every day in December, with the idea being that people will ask why you’re wearing a dress! In response, you can tell people about human trafficking (particularly sex trafficking) and direct them to your fundraising page where they can contribute to help with urgent needs, rescue operations, and aftercare for victims.

Although I work on quite a number of issues through a variety of organizations, sex trafficking is, by far, my number one issue of concern. I feel called to address this issue, to advocate for victims, to raise funds and awareness, and most importantly, to show the love of Jesus.

Just a few statistics from Polaris (without a doubt the best resource for human trafficking issues):

  • Since 2007, the National Human Trafficking Hotline, operated by Polaris, has received reports of 14,588 sex trafficking cases inside the United States.
  • In 2014, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children estimated that 1 in 6 endangered runaways reported to them were likely sex trafficking victims.
  • Globally, the International Labor Organization estimates that there are 4.5 million people trapped in forced sexual exploitation globally.
  • In a 2014 report, the Urban Institute estimated that the underground sex economy ranged from $39.9 million in Denver, Colorado, to $290 million in Atlanta, Georgia. (PolarisProject.org)

We cannot ignore the problem. We must fight against oppression and be the advocate these victims need!

Psalm 33:5 (NRSV): He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord.

Serve all with love.
