Mike Pence and the liberals vs. conservatives

By Kristen Johnson

Recently, I overheard a comment from one of my “Conservative Christian” friends in which she declared that she couldn’t vote for Hillary Clinton because she is “pro-abortion.” She also didn’t want to vote for Donald Trump because his views weren’t always Christian…..but she’d vote for the ticket because Mike Pence was a “real” Christian.

It’s not for us to say whether or not a person is a “real” Christian – that’s between a person and God. But, we can look at a person’s actions to see if we feel they are “acting” Christian. And, we can certainly look at some the issues and voting records of the various candidates to see how they align with our closely held values. Personally, I highly consider women’s issues, environmental issues, immigration views, healthcare, etc. As a Liberal Christian, I can’t vote for Donald Trump at any rate. But, I don’t see much to like about his running mate either.

While Governor, Pence signed a bill allowing business to discriminate against gay customers for religious reasons. In 12 years as a congressman, he voted against almost every environmental bill, and he voted to bar the EPA from regulating greenhouse gases. He refused to enforce new rules from the Obama administration to reduce prison rape. He was one of 31 governors to oppose the settlement of Syrian refugees in his state. (Mother Jones).

His record on women is appalling. As a congressman, Mike Pence authored a bill to defund Planned Parenthood (an organization that provides cancer screening and HIV screenings for women, among many other health services). When governor, he opposed LGBTQ rights. He voted against the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and Paycheck Fairness Act. (Huffington Post).

I’m glad I’m a liberal. I see little to like about Mike Pence.

Once again, it’s time to remember that we are supposed to be serving our neighbor, loving everyone, opening our lives to refugees, and being the change in the world.

Phillipians 2:32 (NRSV): Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves.

Serve all with love.

  1. Just a side. I don’t believe people who believe in a woman’s right to chose means they are “for abortion”. I am not “for abortion”, I could not have one myself, but I do not believe it’s the government’s business what I choose. I don’t believe anyone is pro abortion.

    1. And I 100% agree with you. It’s extremely annoying when I hear people refer to Hillary as “pro-abortion” or, worse, as a “baby killer.” If you don’t like abortion, don’t have one. I also couldn’t do it myself, but I can’t make that decision for anyone else…..and, frankly, I’m sick of rich men in Washington telling me what I can and cannot do with my ovaries.
