International Day of Peace AND World Gratitude Day

By Kristen Johnson

Today, September 21st, we celebrate International Day of Peace and World Gratitude Day. It seems incredibly fitting that these holidays fall on the same day – the world would certainly be filled with gratitude if we had actual peace each and every day. A little background:

World Gratitude Day…. was started in 1977 by the United Nations Meditation Group. It’s a time to celebrate your existence, passions, local hero’s, relatives, friends and all the little things that bring joy into your everyday existence. (New York Daily News).

International Day of PeaceThe Day’s theme for 2016 is “The Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace.”

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals were unanimously adopted by the 193 Member States of the United Nations at an historic summit of the world’s leaders in New York in September 2015. The new ambitious 2030 agenda calls on countries to begin efforts to achieve these goals over the next 15 years. It aims to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. (

Ending poverty, protecting the planet, and prosperity for all – ambitious goals to say the least. Being grateful for out blessings – also an ambitious goal and one we should practice everyday.

What a wonderful world it would be if we all worked to end poverty by committing to community service, fundraising, education for all, and micro loans. What a wonderful world it would be if we all committed to recycling, planting community gardens, reducing or eliminating meat consumption, and eating organic. What a wonderful world it would be if we made a gratitude list each and every day. Even better – what a wonderful world it would be if we shared that gratitude list with everyone around us, instead of sharing our negativity lists.

Colossians 3:15 (NRSV): And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful.

Be peacemakers. Love your neighbor. Protect each other.

Please send a comment with your gratitude list today!

Serve all with love.

  1. I am so grateful that God has left the door open for me to return to Him.
I have his Peace amidst a busy and careless world, and this is a peace that the world cannot give, and the world can not take away.
    Thank you
